Nagant Brésilien M.1883
This
Nagant M.1883 revolver is part of a contract awarded to the firm by Brazil in
1883 to standardize its equipment. A total of 3,000 revolvers were ordered from
the Belgian company. The weapon is a modified version of the Model 1878, adapted
specifically to the needs of the Brazilian Navy. These revolvers remained in
service until the 1940s, when they were gradually replaced by semi-automatic

"Brazilian NAGANT M.1883. The approximately 3,000
revolvers supplied to Brazil by Nagant resemble the Belgian M.1883 at first
glance. However, upon closer inspection, some differences in detail become
apparent. Given that the Brazilian revolvers fire .44 caliber ammunition, their
barrels are thicker: 17.1 mm compared to 15.7 mm. They are also slightly longer
(+6 mm). The cylinder has a diameter of 43.4 mm (compared to 41.4 mm); it is
smooth like the Belgian model but lacks a rear reinforcement ring, meaning the
locking notches are cut directly into the rear circumference of the cylinder."
Another difference regarding the cylinder axis and the ejector rod: the head of
the rod is elongated and fluted (flat on Belgian models), while the head of the
cylinder axis features a push-button, similar to the Belgian M.1878 models. The
cartridge caliber for the Brazilian M.1883 is .44 Nagant (Erlmeier-Brandt No.
410). The Navy revolver is double-action (DA) ".
